The Worn-Out Midwife: Cultivating Resilience and Self-Care in Modern Midwifery Practice

September 11, 2025 By Frontier Nursing University

Sponsored by Frontier Nursing University’s Sigma Theta Tau Chapter

Midwifery is a uniquely rewarding and demanding profession. However, the high emotional and physical toll of the work, coupled with systemic and organizational stressors, can lead to chronic stress and professional burnout. This presentation will delve into the current landscape of burnout among midwives, exploring key contributing factors such as moral distress, workload, and lack of autonomy. We will discuss evidence-based strategies for building personal resilience and implementing effective self-care practices. Viewers will be provided with practical tools and actionable steps to not only recognize and mitigate burnout in their own lives but also to advocate for systemic changes that support long-term professional well-being.

Learning Outcomes:  At the end of this presentation learners will be able to identify evidence-based strategies for building personal resilience and implementing effective self-care practices through the development of a self-care plan.

  1. Analyze the primary causes and signs of professional burnout specific to the midwifery profession.
  2. State at least three evidence-based strategies for enhancing personal resilience.
  3. Outline a personal, actionable self-care plan to promote well-being and career sustainability.
