Mindfulness Self Care for the Provider
Providers are in increasingly stressful environments. In this hour-long presentation we will cover the history of mindfulness, supporting research, and its evidence-based use in practice and self care. We will teach various formal and informal practices that can be used at the moment.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the CE section the participant will be able to:
- The participants will have practiced at least three methods to increase mindfulness and decrease stress.
- Accurately describe three mindfulness practices they can use.
- Describe the relationship between mindfulness and its impact on the mind-body connection.
- List three ways self-compassion practice helps address the stress response.

Presenters
Nicole Lassiter, DNP, PMH-C, CNM, CNE
Nicole earned a BA in Women’s Studies and BSN nursing degree from The University of Virginia in 1994 and 1998, her MSN degrees from both FNU and Case Western University in 2003 and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) from Frontier Nursing University (FNU) in 2019. In midwifery Nicole found the most rewarding and most challenging path, providing full-scope care in freestanding birth centers and high risk labor and delivery units primarily with Medicaid and underserved populations. Her past volunteer work includes midwifery care in rural Guatemala and Haiti, and serving as the communications advisor to the board of The Birth Center of Boulder. She currently peer reviews for the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health (JMWH) and volunteers for Postpartum Support International (PSI) as newslinks editor. Over the span of her midwifery career, she has presented on and contributed to various publications on professional liability and disclosure, interprofessional communication, and pharmacology for women’s health. She has been teaching with FNU since 2007. She enjoys being of service to others, time with her husband, friends and family, meditation and mindfulness practices, reading and writing, film, live theater, traveling, and time in nature.
Katie Moriarty, CNM, PhD, CAFCI, FACNM
Katie Moriarty, CNM, PhD, CAFCI, FACNM is on faculty at Frontier Nursing University. She received her BScN from the University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada), MS and PhD from University of Illinois at Chicago, and completed postdoctoral studies/fellowships in integrative healthcare and ecology. Katie was an Integrative Healthcare Faculty Scholar and co-director of the Nurse Midwifery Education Program while at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) School of Nursing. She was also a Health Leaders Fellow at the Ecology Center in Detroit, MI. The focus was exploring toxins, sustainable food systems, the environment and their impact on health. As a midwife she has supported women/people/families in all birth settings (home, freestanding birth center, in hospital alternative birthing center/ and hospital practice). She was the first midwife certified by Acupuncture Canada and went on to develop an Integrative Healthcare Clinic for Women and Reproductive Women’s Health incorporating acupuncture/acupressure, moxabustion, and mind body modalities. Dr. Moriarty has spoken on stress/anxiety/coping and resiliency utilizing evidence based integrative healthcare modalities internationally, nationally and locally. She served 2 terms (6 years, 2014-2020) as the Region IV Rep on the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) BOD. Ana Verzone, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, CNM
Ana Verzone has been working with rural populations since 2004. She has taught at Frontier Nursing University since 2018 in the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing programs and previously taught in the University of Alaska’s FNP program from 2016-2018. Ana is passionate about global and rural health and training excellent clinicians who take into account the wholeness of a patient, and the sociocultural context in which they live. Currently living in Alaska and also working on the Big Island of Hawaii, she has worked in various settings, including with the Rural Anchorage Service Unit and Alaska Native Medical Center providing primary, urgent, and emergency care in rural Alaska, as a hospitalist midwife with Providence Medical Center, and as a provider at her own Integrative Medicine and Psychiatry clinic in Anchorage. She enjoys international volunteer work and has served in Uganda, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Nepal, and more. When not teaching, Ana loves playing in the mountains with her daughter, husband, and dog – especially flyfishing, climbing, backpacking, and exploring in the wilderness of Alaska and nature of Hawai’i.
Introduction
Eva Fried, DNP, CNM, WHNP
Eva Fried is an experienced midwifery and women’s health clinician and educator. In addition to teaching and clinical practice, she has made significant contributions to the professions of midwifery and advanced practice nursing through writing, advocacy work, and community building. In her work as faculty member and as program director, Eva demonstrates commitment to excellence in distance education, fostering belongingness and community in distance education, and informing every step of each student’s experience from application through graduation with a diversity, equity, and inclusion framework. Eva currently works in full scope nurse-midwifery practice in addition to her work in an academic environment.
