The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among wealthy nations. Over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are preventable. According to national data, 1,200 women around the U.S. die of pregnancy complications per year, while another 50,000 have life-threatening complications, and maternal mortality happens with women of color three to four times more than it does with Caucasian women.

Nurse-midwives play a crucial role in the early detection, management, and treatment of perinatal depression. As healthcare providers who often build strong, trusting relationships with women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, they are in a unique position to recognize the signs of perinatal depression early on and provide timely interventions. Participants will review the signs and symptoms, prevalence, screening tools and criteria of perinatal depression utilizing a case study to illustrate treatment options for patients experiencing major depression in the post-partum period of pregnancy.

Substance use disorders (SUD) are a leading cause of pregnancy-associated deaths, with most deaths occurring during the 12 months after pregnancy. There is a growing call to create innovative care models to address this crisis. Participants will gain insight into how specialized care addresses the unique medical, psychological, and social challenges faced by new mothers with a history of substance use.
